Blast From the Past #5 - Hüsker Dü

You cannot argue with the impact that the 1980's Minneapolis trio Husker Du had on "alternative" music. They were about 10 years ahead of thier time, and paved the way for the Nirvana's of the world and the "grunge movement" in the 1990's. This is probably the band LEAST likely to reunite, as Bob Mould and Grant Hart reportedly hate each other, and Greg Norton owns a successful restaurant in Red Wing.

This video for "Makes No Sense At All" contains some great shots of 1980's-era Minneapolis, with the IDS building and Foshay Tower being the only true "skyscrapers" at the time. They video ends with "The Mary Tyler Moore theme" and a spoof of the opening of that Minneapolis-based sitcom.

I was always more of a "Replacements guy" back in The Day, but Husker Du will forever remind me of my college days at the University of Leinenkugels, living with Jon, Jase, Troyvis and Ronnie-San.

Good memories from Blast of the Past #5 - Husker Du.

kick ass video dude. Husker Du and the mats paved the way for the whole alt-rock era. Although bob mould was ahead of his time with husker du, he would enjoy a brief moment in the sun with sugar, one of my favorite bands of that era. just think: if the mats would have came out at the exact same time as nirvana, they could have been bigger than them. they all owe a debt to mould and westerberg. too bad no one cared about them when they should have

tony - I totally agree. I just read this book about The Replacements written by Jim Walsh and there was a good quote in it.

I believe it was Peter Jesperson, thier manager, who said that the record company execs told him that the Replacements were "too edgy" for radio airplay in the mid-80's. Then, by the time grunge hit in the early 90's, they told him that they were not "edgy enough" for radio.

Typical.

Jase - I will always remember Ronnie-San's stacks of albums in the State Street house with New Day Rising usually near the top.

Boom-shanka.

...and Troy listening to Candy Apple Grey while doing "homework" with his glasses on that only had one lens.

"Troy, are you going out tonight?"
"Nope...gotta do homework"

"Troy, are you going ouy tonight?"
"Yup!"

Totally - that conversation took place almost constantly with Troy.

I never understood the glasses with one lens.
